Klebsiella pneumoniae and Healthcare Acquired Infections
Do you know why Healthcare Acquired Infections are on the rise? One reason is Klebsiella pneumoniae. Actually, Klebsiella pneumoniae CAN be a friendly bacterium, especially to our environment and GI tract; but nurses don’t turn your back! These little capsule wearing, sticky suckers can cause serious havoc to the fragile lungs. To put it briefly, Klebsiella pneumoniae can be an opportunistic bacterium. In fact, it can cause a dangerous form of bacterial pneumonia in children, the elderly and immunocompromised individuals. Contact with feces allows people to serve as reservoirs and transmit the bacteria from person to person. Back in the 1940’s having a baby was a scary event for mothers. Mother’s called their doctors when they thought they were in labor. The doctor determined if Mother should come to the hospital. When mothers arrived at the hospital the nurse prepared her for Labor and Delivery. The nurse gave the mother an enema. This was done to keep fecal material from contaminating the vaginal area. The nurse then shaved the perineal area of pubic hair. Pubic hair was believed to be a source of bacteria. Parents Present During Invasive Procedures – Take it to your Clinical Practice Council. When working for a family practice physician, I learned the significance of maternal or fraternal presence with an invasive procedure. This physician was emphatic that the father of the infant be present during a circumcision. He would allow the mother to stay in the waiting room but the father must be with his newborn son during the circumcision. We told the father what we will do and what he, as the father, would do to comfort the infant. It became the father’s job to talk to his child and use the pacifier during the procedure.
