Upon completion of Chapter One the learner will be able to verbalize the neonatal effects of the following maternal risks:

  • Diabetes
  • Cardiac Disorders
  • Renal Disorders
  • Teratogen use
  • Upon completion of Chapter Two the learner will be able to name to 5 assessments and the significance of the following Apgar scores:
  • Apgar score of 7-10
  • Apgar score of 4-6
  • Apgar score of 0-3

Upon completion of Chapter Three the learner will be able to verbalize the significance of the following physical examinations:

  • The Initial Period of Reactivity
  • The Period of Relative Reactivity
  • The Second Period of Reactivity
  • In addition, the learner will be able to
  • State the important signs that require further investigation in the assessment of the newborn.
  • State the conditions that require transfer of the newborn to the NICU

  • Breastfeeding
  • Formula feeding
  • Upon completion of Chapter Six the learner will be able to verbalize the following:
  • Significance of neonatal jaundice
  • Management of neonatal jaundice
  • Causes of neonatal jaundice.
  • Upon completion of Chapter Seven the learner will be able to assist in the circumcision of the male infant.
  • Upon completion of Chapter Eight the learner will be able to verbalize the significance of the following genetic screening disorders:
  • PKU
  • Galactosemia
  • Maple Syrup Disease
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Sickle Cell
  • Hypothyroidism
  • In addition the learner will be able to verbalize
  • When to collect the specimen
  • How to complete the information on the NBS Collection Form
  • Limitations of the NBS Program
