Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring

Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring will provide the novice Labor and Delivery nurse with comprehensive introductory training for the skills needed to perform fetal surveillance through electronic fetal heart monitoring. Most notably, this course provides an overview of the antepartum period and methods of antepartum testing. Moreover, aspiring obstetrical nurses will learn the various methods of fetal heart monitoring including internal vs external monitoring considerations. Furthermore, this course will define the etiologies related to characteristics of the following; baseline fetal heart rate, variability and fetal heart deceleration’s. In addition, Category 2 and Category 3 fetal heart strips and their nursing interventions will be discussed in great detail. Upon completion of this course students will acquire the adequate skills to assess fetal heart strips and perform appropriate interventions.

Fundamentals of Labor and Delivery Care will provide the novice Labor and Delivery nurse with a comprehensive introduction to the care of the mother and fetus in the Labor and Delivery unit. For example, the nurse will learn how to perform an ongoing assessment of maternal progress through the first, second and third stage of labor. Additionally, students will learn how to recognize physical and psycho-social findings indicative of maternal progress during labor. Moreover, Students will learn the nursing interventions for emergent situations such as; prolapsed cord, shoulder dystocia, and fetal bradycardia. Last but not least, nursing implementations and indications for cervical ripening agents, such as Pitocin, will be analyzed and discussed.

The Baby-Friendly USA Hospital Initiative is a global program. To illustrate, this initiative encourages the implementation of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. Furthermore, this national measure also promotes the International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes. As a matter of fact, hospitals may be designated Baby-Friendly for their promotion of Baby-Friendly practices. Before a hospital can receive this prestigious accreditation it must go through a rigorous and structured designation process. Consequently, the most challenging and complex component is training the nursing staff in the skills needed to implement these policies. To summarize, in the Baby-Friendly USA Birth and Beyond Lactation course, students will learn how to implement the 10 steps to successful breastfeeding. Lastly, topics covered include: the risks of not breastfeeding, how to counsel families about the benefits of breast milk, proper positioning, latch, special considerations and much more.
