The purpose of the Fremont Maternal Child Care Training event is to improve the practice of participating nurses in San Jose, California; therefore, improving the health status of women and children in your communities.

About Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring

Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring includes comprehensive introductory training for the skills needed to perform fetal surveillance through electronic Fetal Heart Monitoring. The course provides an overview of the antepartum period, plus methods of antenatal testing. Most notably, the nurse will learn different methods of Fetal Heart Monitoring; as well as the considerations that must be made for internal vs external monitoring. In addition, this course will define the etiologies related to characteristics of the baseline fetal heart rate, variability, and fetal heart deceleration’s. Last but not least, Category II and III fetal heart strips will be discussed. In conclusion, the RN will acquire the skills to assess fetal heart strips and perform appropriate interventions.

About the Neonatal Resuscitation Program

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is the required certification for any Maternal Child Health position. Students must first complete the AAP’s online NRP exam via HealthStream prior to attending a skills session. The following requirements must be completed prior to attending the NRP Skills Session.

Baby Friendly USA Birth and Beyond Lactation training is a valuable certification for all maternal child health nurses.

The Baby Friendly USA Hospital initiative encourages the implementation of the Ten Steps To Successful Breastfeeding. In addition, this global program includes the International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes. To illustrate, before a hospital can receive this prestigious accreditation, it must go through a rigorous designation process. Training nurses in the skills needed to implement these policies has proven most challenging.

To summarize, Baby Friendly USA Birth and Beyond Lactation training educates nurses on how to implement the 10 steps to successful breastfeeding.

In addition, topics covered include the risks of not breastfeeding; as well as how to counsel families about the benefits of breast milk. Furthermore, nurses will learn how to educate parents on skin to skin, feeding cues and breastfeeding by demand. Moreover, students will learn how to assist mothers with proper positioning and latching. Last but not least, risks associated with breastfeeding will be discussed, such as: sore nipples, edema, mastitis, plus special considerations like breast implants, alternative modes of feeding, and more.
