AHA Online Heartcode

What is a HeartCode®?

HeartCode® is a self-directed, comprehensive eLearning program through the American Heart Association that uses eSimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings. Taking an online HeartCode® class will give you an equivalent AHA certification as if you were taking a traditional in-person course.

HeartCode® courses consist of two parts:

Part 1: The online course, found at: www.onlineaha.org
The online portion consists of videos, eSimulations, multiple-choice exam, and course evaluation.

Part 2: Hands-on skills. HeartCode® courses are not complete until you come in for a skills check-off. After your skills check-off, you will receive your AHA card, valid for two years. We offer skills check-offs for ACLS, BLS, and PALS.

Prefer to Learn in the Classroom?

HeartCode® courses aren’t for everyone – especially if you are not computer-friendly. If you prefer an instructor-led class, we offer ACLS, BLS, and PALS weekly in Costa Mesa and San Diego.

Part 1

To access your HeartCode® online course:

  1. Go to www.onlineaha.org and search through the course catalog for the course you need OR purchase a course keycode from us – our course keycodes will activate the course you need.
  2. You will be prompted to create an account – this allows your progress to be saved. You are able to start and stop HeartCode® courses at your own pace.
  3. You must watch all videos, complete all eSimulations, pass the exam, and evaluate the course.

CAUTION: There are several non-accredited websites that may advertise online courses for AHA classes. Ensure that you are completing all online courses through www.onlineaha.org

Certificate for Part 1

Upon completion of Part 1, you will be given a digital certificate of completion. You must print out the certificate and bring it with you to your scheduled skills session.

Part 2

HeartCode® Part 2 consists of in-person skills. You will not receive your card until you come in for a skills session. We offer skills weekly for ACLS, BLS, and PALS. You must bring with you your certificate of completion from the online course.

Be prepared to demonstrate:

  • High quality CPR including chest compressions, ventilations, and using an AED
  • Recognition of adult/pediatric rhythms and the appropriate interventions
  • Managing a code scenario in a team environment

Your certification card will be valid for two years.
