Colorado Maternal Child Training event: Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring and Baby Friendly USA

The purpose of the Colorado Maternal Child Training event is to improve the practice of participating nurses; thus, ultimately improving the health status of women and children.

In addition, the Colorado Maternal Child Training event aims to prepare the novice nurse for a position in Maternal Child Health. In particular, Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring is required for Labor and Delivery New Grad positions. On the other hand, for experienced nurses, our program will provide the knowledge and skills to promote and protect breastfeeding and the Baby Friendly Initiative.

Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring

Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring will provide the RN, or Nursing Student, with comprehensive introductory training for the skills needed to perform fetal surveillance through electronic Fetal Heart Monitoring. This course is ideal for the new grad aspiring for a position in the Labor and Delivery Unit.

Most noteworthy, the course provides an overview of the antepartum period, plus methods of antenatal testing. Next, the nurse will learn different methods of Fetal Heart Monitoring, as well as the considerations that must be made for internal vs external monitoring. In addition, this course will define the etiologies related to characteristics of the baseline fetal heart rate, variability and fetal heart deceleration. Also, category II and III fetal heart strips will be discussed in further detail. Last but not least, the learner will understand the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication with soon-to-be-mothers and families.

Upon completion of Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring the RN will acquire the skills to assess fetal heart strips, perform appropriate interventions, proper documentation and more.

Introduction to Baby Friendly USA

Introduction to Baby Friendly USA is a lead-in course to the renowned Birth and Beyond Lactation certification. Students will learn the basics of applying the rigorous Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative to the maternal child health environment. To summarize, in the Introduction to Baby Friendly USA course, students will learn how to: effectively counsel patients and their families; the benefits of breastfeeding; last but not least, how to assist mothers with latching and positioning. In addition, the instructor will provide tips on how to “nail the interview”.

Further, the Baby Friendly USA Hospital Initiative is a global program. To illustrate, this initiative encourages the implementation of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. In fact, hospital prefer to hire candidates with knowledge of the Baby Friendly Initiative as well as the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.
