Maternal Child Health Training is coming to Bay Area, CA to include Basic Fetal Heart, Baby Friendly Training, Labor and Delivery Care

Nurses Educational Opportunities is enthusiastic and eager to bring our Maternal Child Training Program to the Bay Area.

The purpose of the Bay Area Maternal Child Training Program is to improve the practice of participating nurses; therefore, ultimately improving the health status of women and children. These courses include: Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring, Baby Friendly Birth and Beyond Lactation Training; Fundamentals of Labor and Delivery Care; Fundamentals of Postpartum Care & Newborn Assessment; plus Obstetrical Emergencies.

We encourage Student Nurses, New Grads, Transitioning Nurses, plus experienced OB Nurses to attend the Bay Area Maternal Child Training. The reason being is that there is still so much to learn in regards to Maternal Child Health. Even more, each course offers Contact Education Hours or CEH’s. Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring

Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring will provide the RN, or Nursing Student, with comprehensive introductory training for the skills needed to perform fetal surveillance through electronic Fetal Heart Monitoring.

Most notably, the course provides an overview of the antepartum period, plus methods of antenatal testing. The nurse will learn different methods of Fetal Heart Monitoring, as well as the considerations that must be made for internal vs external monitoring. In addition, this course will define the etiologies related to characteristics of the baseline fetal heart rate, variability and fetal heart deceleration’s. Last but not least, Category II and III fetal heart strips will be discussed in further detail. Upon completion of Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring the RN will acquire¬†the skills to assess fetal heart strips and perform appropriate interventions.

Fundamentals of Labor & Delivery Care

Fundamentals of Labor and Delivery Care provides a comprehensive introduction to the care of the mother and fetus in the Labor and Delivery Unit.

Most noteworthy, the RN, or Nursing Student, will learn how to perform ongoing assessments of maternal progress through the first, second and third stage of labor. Additionally, nurses will learn how to effectively recognize physical and emotional findings indicative of maternal progress during labor. Nursing interventions will be discussed for emergent situations such as: umbilical cord prolapse; shoulder dystocia; fetal bradycardia; abnormal fetal heart rate patterns, and so much more. Even more, students will also learn nursing implementations for cervical ripening agents and Pitocin, which augment labor.

Baby Friendly USA Birth and Beyond Lactation Training

Birth and Beyond Lactation training is a valuable certification for all nurses currently working for; or entering the maternal child health environment.

The Baby Friendly USA Hospital Initiative is a global program. This initiative encourages the implementation of the Ten Steps To Successful Breastfeeding. In addition, this global program includes the International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes. To illustrate, before a hospital can receive this prestigious accreditation, it must go through a rigorous and structured designation process. Training nurses in the skills needed to implement these policies has proven most challenging. Nurses should be compelled to examine, challenge and modify long standing policies regarding bottle feeding.

To summarize, in the Baby Friendly USA Birth and Beyond Lactation course the RN, or nursing student, will learn how to implement the 10 steps to successful breastfeeding. Topics covered include the risks of not breastfeeding and how to counsel families about the benefits of breast milk. Last but not least, students will learn how to assist mothers with proper positioning and latching, special considerations and much more. Additionally, Birth and Beyond Lactation is designed as a Staff Training Curriculum to meet the Baby-Friendly USA 4-D Pathway Guidelines.

Postpartum Care & Neonatal Assessment

Fundamentals of Postpartum Care and Neonatal Assessment focuses on the postpartum period through the day of discharge.

In brief, the RN, or Student Nurse, will learn the skills needed to assess and implement appropriate nursing interventions for maternal emotional and physical health. Students will learn how to perform a complete head to toe assessment of the newborn. This will include the skills required for the one and five minute APGAR score. In addition, methods of performing the newborn screening will be covered. Furthermore, Fundamentals of Postpartum Care and Neonatal Assessment will cover: venous thrombo-embolism; obstetrical hemorrhage; Postpartum preeclampsia; and more potential adverse effects. Lastly, Fundamentals of Postpartum Care and Neonatal Assessment is the perfect course because many hospitals are now mandating Labor and Delivery nurses to perform the initial newborn assessment.

Fundamentals of Postpartum & Newborn Care

Obstetrical Emergencies

Obstetrical Nurses MUST be adept in providing basic and advanced life support. Especially, in situations where deterioration of maternal status results in respiratory or cardiac arrest.

First, Obstetrical Emergencies reviews the most common causes of maternal cardiac arrest. Similarly, modifications for effective maternal cardiopulmonary resuscitation, including perimortem cesarean birth, are discussed. In addition, nurses will learn the proper assessments to prevent life-threatening events for pregnant women and neonates. Additionally, the course covers management of cardiopulmonary arrest in pregnancy; plus the implementation of perimortem (at or near death) cesarean delivery. This is an excellent class for all Labor and Delivery Nurses. Most noteworthy, Obstetrical Emergencies is an important course for any healthcare provider that is in direct care of the gravid woman.
